CAMTOP Adjustable Choke Valve H2 Type - Red Flanged Wellhead Choke Valve

Product Overview

CAMTOO manufactures both Positive (fixed) and Adjustable Choke Valves rated for working pressures up to 15,000 psi WP, available with various end connection configurations. The H2 Type Adjustable Choke Valve is specifically designed for variable flow control applications.

The adjustable choke features an external control indicator that displays orifice size in 1/64-inch increments, allowing operators to precisely set and monitor flow rates. By rotating the hand wheel, the choke orifice size is varied to achieve the desired downstream flow, providing responsive and accurate well control.

This choke valve is widely used in choke and kill manifolds, production test headers, and wellhead flow control systems where precise pressure and flow rate management is critical.

Key Features & Design Highlights

1/64″ Increment Control

External control indicator shows orifice size in precise 1/64-inch increments, enabling micrometer-level flow rate adjustment for critical well control operations.

Flexible Configuration

Interchangeable components allow the same choke body to be configured as Positive (fixed), Adjustable, or Combination choke valve to meet varying operational requirements.

Pressure Relief Safety Feature

Built-in safety mechanism releases trapped body pressure before the bonnet nut is fully disengaged. Upon partial unthreading, the valve body vents to atmosphere for safe disassembly.

Robust Bonnet Nut

Oversized bonnet nut with integral forged lugs designed for hammer-assisted loosening, ensuring reliable field serviceability even in harsh conditions.

Cross-Rating Interchangeability

Components within the same pressure class can be interchanged. Identical plug and bonnet assemblies used across 2-inch, 2,000 to 10,000 psi WP models for parts standardization.

Premium Needle & Seat Materials

Standard: Stainless steel construction. Severe service: Tungsten carbide or ceramic-lined needle and seat available for abrasive and high-velocity flow conditions.

End Connection Options

CAMTOP choke valves are available with various end connection configurations to match any wellhead, manifold, or flowline installation:

API Flanged

Standard API 6A flanged connections for wellhead and manifold integration

ANSI Flanged

ANSI B16.5 flanged connections for process and pipeline applications

Threaded

Precision API threaded connections for compact installations

Custom Connections

Bespoke end connections per customer project specifications

Working Principle

The CAMTOP H2 Type Adjustable Choke Valve operates on a variable orifice principle. A tapered needle (stem tip) is precisely positioned against a seat ring to create an adjustable annular flow passage. By rotating the hand wheel, the operator varies the gap between the needle and seat, thereby controlling the effective flow area and downstream pressure drop.

The external indicator mechanically translates stem position into a calibrated display showing the equivalent orifice diameter in 1/64-inch increments. This provides the operator with a reliable visual reference for repeatable flow settings.

Key Application: Adjustable choke valves are primarily used in choke and kill manifolds to control backpressure during drilling and well testing operations, regulate production flow rates, and manage pressure in multi-well header systems.

Oilfield Applications

  • Choke and Kill Manifold flow control during drilling operations
  • Production well testing, clean-up, and flowback operations
  • Wellhead pressure regulation and production rate management
  • Multi-well header systems requiring independent flow control
  • Gas lift injection rate optimization
  • Water injection well flow control and monitoring

Materials & Construction

Body & Bonnet

Forged alloy steel (AISI 4130/4140), heat-treated for high-pressure service with enhanced H2S corrosion resistance.

Needle (Stem Tip)

Standard: Stainless steel 316. Severe service: Tungsten carbide tip brazed to alloy steel stem for extreme erosion resistance.

Seat Ring

Stainless steel or ceramic-lined hardened alloy steel for sustained dimensional accuracy under abrasive flow conditions.

Bonnet Nut & Sealing

Forged alloy steel bonnet nut with metal-to-metal or PTFE/graphite stem packing for reliable pressure containment.

Hand Wheel

Heavy-duty ductile iron or forged steel construction with calibrated position indicator for precise orifice setting.

Fasteners

ASTM A193 B7 / B7M stud bolts with A194 2H / 2HM heavy hex nuts, suitable for NACE MR0175 sour service.

Operating Instructions

Flow Adjustment: Rotate the hand wheel clockwise (CW) to reduce orifice size and decrease flow rate. Rotate counterclockwise (CCW) to increase orifice size and flow rate. The external indicator displays the current setting in 1/64-inch increments. Always rotate the hand wheel smoothly; avoid rapid operation that may cause sudden pressure changes downstream.

Full Open Position: Rotate CCW until the indicator shows the maximum orifice setting. This position provides maximum flow area for well clean-up operations or when minimal flow restriction is desired.

Full Close: For positive shut-off applications, rotate CW until the needle seats firmly. A separate gate valve or block valve should be installed upstream or downstream for reliable isolation — the choke is NOT designed as a primary shut-off device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between adjustable and positive choke valves?
Adjustable chokes feature a variable orifice controlled by hand wheel rotation, allowing operators to change flow rates dynamically (measured in 1/64″ increments). Positive (fixed) chokes have a pre-selected, non-adjustable orifice size and are used where consistent, unchanging flow restriction is needed. CAMTOP components are interchangeable, allowing you to configure either type from the same base valve body.
What is the maximum working pressure rating?
CAMTOP adjustable choke valves are rated for working pressures up to 15,000 psi WP (103.4 MPa). Products are available across standard pressure classes including 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, 10,000, and 15,000 psi. Each unit is hydrostatically shell tested at 1.5 times its rated working pressure.
Can the choke valve be used as a shut-off valve?
No. Choke valves are designed for flow regulation, not positive shut-off. While the adjustable needle will seat and reduce flow significantly, it is NOT rated as a bubble-tight isolation device. Always install a dedicated gate valve or block valve upstream/downstream for reliable shut-off when maintenance or isolation is required.
What material options are available for severe service?
For abrasive, high-velocity, or corrosive flow conditions, CAMTOP offers tungsten carbide needle tips and ceramic-lined seats. These materials provide significantly extended service life compared to standard stainless steel in applications such as frac flowback, sand-laden production fluids, and high-pressure gas well testing.
What end connections are available?
CAMTOP adjustable chokes are available with API 6A flanged connections (standard for wellhead and manifold applications), ANSI B16.5 flanged connections (for process piping), or API threaded connections (for smaller sizes and compact installations). Custom end connections can be engineered upon request.
Is the choke valve available in NACE MR0175 sour service configuration?
Yes. CAMTOP provides full NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant chokes with controlled-hardness materials, B7M bolting, and appropriate seal materials for sour gas service in hydrogen sulfide (H2S) containing environments.
