7. How It Works

1. Open Position: Hydraulic pressure in the closing chamber is released. The piston retracts, opening the bore for full-bore tool passage and drill-string circulation.
2. Close on Pipe: Hydraulic pressure pushes the piston downward, compressing the elastomer packer around the drill pipe — sealing the annulus.
3. Close on Open Hole: With no drill pipe present, the elastomer packer fully closes inward under hydraulic pressure, providing a complete pressure barrier.
4. Wear-Band Function: Bronze wear rings at ⑬ ⑮ ⑱ (P/N 150613) prevent metal-to-metal contact between the piston and housing during stroke, extending elastomer life and reducing maintenance interval.
5. Field Rebuild: Loosen the 16× B7 cover studs (P/N 150790) using the Hammer Wrench (P/N 050821). Lift off the upper housing-Studded (P/N 150726) for full access to piston, elastomer packers, and wear bands. Replace wear items per Section 6 BOM; reinstall with even torque across all studs (typically 600–800 ft-lb for B7 1-1/8″-8UN).
