Description
CAMTOP Manual Tool Trap / Hydraulic Tool Trap
35 MPa – 105 MPa Wireline Pressure Control Equipment | Alloy Steel | H2S Service
Product Overview
The CAMTOP Manual Tool Trap and Hydraulic Tool Trap are essential wireline pressure-control safety devices installed between the lubricator and the wellhead. They are designed to prevent wireline tools, instruments, or swabs from falling into the wellbore in the event of accidental cable stretch, cable break, or unexpected release of the tool string after it has been lifted into the lubricator.
The tool trap is normally closed when not actively passing tools and is opened only when the tool string is being run in or pulled out. Both manual and hydraulic actuation options are available to suit surface-control preferences and operational automation levels. The body is manufactured from high-strength alloy steel and is suitable for oil, gas, and H2S-containing service conditions.
Working Pressure: 35 MPa – 105 MPa (5,000 psi – 15,000 psi) | Lubricator ID: 62 mm – 102 mm | Working Temperature: Up to 220°C (425°F) | Material: Alloy Steel | Actuation: Manual or Hydraulic

Working Principle
The CAMTOP Tool Trap is installed at the lower end of the lubricator or wireline pressure-control stack, directly above the wellhead or Christmas tree. Its internal mechanism is normally closed when the tool string is stationary in the lubricator or when wireline operations are paused.
When the tool string is being lowered or retrieved, the operator (or hydraulic control unit) opens the trap to allow the tool string to pass through. If the cable is accidentally stretched, parted, or released while the tool string is still above the wellhead, the trap immediately closes, catching the tool string and preventing it from falling into the wellbore. This protects both the downhole tools and the wellbore from damage and lost-in-hole incidents.
For the hydraulic version, a surface-mounted control panel or hydraulic power unit provides remote actuation, allowing faster operation and integration with automated wireline units. The manual version uses a handwheel or lever mechanism for direct mechanical operation.
Applications
- Wireline logging, perforating, and well intervention operations
- Slickline and electric-line pressure-control stacks
- High-pressure oil and gas wellhead pressure control
- Sour-service (H2S-containing) wireline operations
- High-temperature well environments up to 425°F
- Offshore and onshore drilling / production wireline units
- Coiled-tubing and snubbing auxiliary pressure-control setups
