What Defines Each Configuration?

  • A single ram BOP has one cavity — one set of rams

Single Ram BOP

Single ram BOPs are the simplest and most compact configuration. Typical applications: onshore workover and well service operations with low kick risk, shallow CBM or geothermal wells.

Advantages: Lightest and most compact; lowest cost; easier to handle. Limitations: Only one well control function per body.

Double Ram BOP — The Industry Standard

The most common double ram BOP configuration for standard drilling is:

  • Upper cavity: Pipe rams (for the primary drill string OD)
  • Lower cavity: Shear blind rams (for emergency pipe cut and full wellbore closure)
