Operating Principle
The CAMTOP M Series Sucker Rod Tong operates on a hydraulic power system driving a hydraulic motor through a manual reversing valve with self-sealing couplings. The operator controls both speed and direction of rotation through the tandem throttle handle to complete make-up and break-out operations.
Make-Up Operation
- Position the tong with the back-up wrench lined up with the rod’s bottom square
- Guide the tong onto the rod so the back-up wrench slides onto the bottom square
- Jaws in the inner ring automatically position to the top square of the rod
- Operate the tandem throttle to rotate the inner ring clockwise (MAKE side up)

Installation Guide
1. Hanging
Connect one end of the hanger to the hanging rod, and the other end to a 9/16″ wire rope hung on the derrick approximately 15 m (50 ft) above the rig. Center-to-well distance should be about 0.5 m (20″) in free condition.
2. Balance Adjustment
With the tong on the rod, adjust the leveling screw at the top of the hanger so the tong hangs perfectly level. Adjust height so jaws align with the top square of the rods.
3. Back Guy (Stiff Arm)
Tie one end to the derrick and the other to the back of the rod tong. Position opposite to the operator at right angle. Must bear 200 kg (440 lbs) load to protect operator safety.
4. Inner Ring Selection
