Description
CAMTOP Sand Trap Separator
API 6A Wellhead Surface Testing Equipment | Alloy Steel | 5,000–15,000 PSI | Sand Catcher
Product Overview
The CAMTOP API 6A High Pressure Sand Trap Separator (also called a sand catcher) is designed per API 6A standard for wellhead surface testing operations. It is engineered to remove sand, proppants and other solid particles from high-pressure, high-yield gas well effluent to prevent erosion of downstream equipment.
Sand traps are typically installed between the wellhead systems and the plug catchers / trash catchers. They are ideal for flowback on sand-fractured stimulations and high-pressure gas wells, and are widely used for completion cleanups, maximum sand-free rate tests, gas well production testing, and sand control after well fracturing, perforating and sand-gravel operations from the formation.
Constructed from alloy steel and qualified for sour service, the CAMTOP sand trap delivers reliable solid-particle separation and is fully integrated into the CAMTOP surface testing equipment portfolio.

Working Principle
The sand trap separator is installed downstream of the wellhead and upstream of the plug catcher / trash catcher. As produced gas and liquids enter the sand trap, a sudden velocity drop and change of flow direction cause heavy sand, proppants and other solid particles to fall out of the fluid stream into a collection chamber at the bottom of the vessel.
The cleaned gas/liquid stream continues downstream to the choke manifold and separator train, while the accumulated solids can be drained through a bottom outlet valve for safe disposal. This arrangement protects downstream chokes, flowlines and separators from sand erosion, plugging and erosion-related failure during high-pressure flowback and well testing.
Applications
- Wellhead surface testing of high-pressure gas and oil wells
- Completion cleanups and maximum sand-free rate tests
- Flowback operations after hydraulic fracturing
- Sand control after perforating and gravel-pack operations
- High-pressure gas well production testing
- Offshore and onshore well testing packages
- Sour-service (H2S) and standard-service well testing
