Product Overview

The CAMTOP QPYG Series Pneumatic Tubing Spider is a compressed-air-driven tubular handling tool engineered for workover and well servicing operations. The spider uses a crank-link mechanism driven by a pneumatic cylinder to raise and lower slip assemblies within a precision-machined tapered bowl, securely gripping drill pipe, tubing, or casing strings.

Three load ratings are available: Model B (110,000 lbs / 55T) for light to medium-duty operations with 1.315″ to 3-1/2″ tubular range; Model C (165,000 lbs / 82.5T) for standard operations with 1.315″ to 5-1/2″ range; and Heavy-Duty Model CHD (250,000 lbs / 125T) for deep well and high-load applications. All models feature heat-treated alloy steel construction and API Spec 7K design compliance.

An integrated manual safety latch mechanically locks the cylinder when slips are engaged, preventing accidental release. The optional hinged gate “A” variants (Model C-A, CHD-A) allow the spider to be opened and removed from the pipe string when passing larger-diameter tools or accessories.

Key Features & Advantages

1. API Spec 7K Compliant Design

Designed and manufactured in accordance with API Spec 7K standards for drilling and well servicing equipment. Each unit ships with certificate of conformance, NDE report, and load test report.

2. Three Load Rating Options

Model B (55T) for light workover, Model C (82.5T) for standard operations, and Model CHD (125T) for heavy-duty deep well applications. All share the same proven crank-link drive mechanism.

3. Manual Safety Latch

Integrated arcuate block safety latch mechanically locks the cylinder when slips are engaged on the pipe. Prevents accidental release of the tubular string even if air pressure is lost. Must be manually released before the cylinder can operate.

4. Interchangeable Slip & Die System

Quick-change slip assemblies and dies accommodate tubulars from 1.315″ to 5-1/2″ in diameter. Dies are individually replaceable wear items. Slip bodies are available in 3-1/2″, 4-1/2″, 4-3/4″, 5″, and 5-1/2″ sizes.

5. Hinged Gate “A” Variants

Models C-A and CHD-A feature a hinged gate with door bolt design. The gate can be opened to allow the spider to be removed from the tubular string when passing objects larger than the bore diameter, without disconnecting the string.

6. ESP Cable Compatibility

Specially profiled slip assemblies allow Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) cables to pass alongside the tubing string without damage. Ideal for ESP installation and retrieval operations.

Operating Principle & Application

The CAMTOP QPYG Pneumatic Spider operates through a crank-link mechanism driven by a pneumatic cylinder. Two symmetrical slip carrier assemblies are connected to crank shafts via lifting lugs. When compressed air is supplied to the cylinder, the connecting rod rotates the crank shafts, raising the slip assemblies to release the pipe or lowering them into the tapered bowl to grip the pipe.

A manual safety latch (arcuate block) engages with the connecting rod shoulder to mechanically lock the crank shafts, preventing accidental slip release. This latch must be manually disengaged before the cylinder can be operated.

Setup & Operation Steps

  1. Verify all components are complete and correctly assembled; confirm slip assembly and die sizes match the tubular to be handled
  2. Bolt the spider to the workover rig floor using the slotted base holes
  3. Connect compressed air supply (87-130 PSI) to the cylinder inlet/outlet fittings
  4. Perform a dry run test — observe that slip assemblies raise and lower smoothly without binding
  5. Always raise the slip assemblies before starting the rig — never allow the string to rotate with slips engaged
  6. Engage the manual safety latch after slips are lowered onto the pipe for extended holding periods
  7. When switching tubular sizes, replace the complete slip assembly set with the correct size

Typical Applications

Workover Operations

Primary tubular holding tool during well workover, recompletion, and stimulation operations for oil, gas, and water wells.

Drill Pipe Handling

Securely grips drill pipe during tripping operations on workover and service rigs.

Tubing & Casing Running

Handles tubing from 1.315″ to 5-1/2″ and casing strings during running and pulling operations.

ESP Installation/Retrieval

Specially profiled slip dies allow ESP cable passage alongside tubing during pump installation and retrieval.

Maintenance & Care

No. Interval Procedure
1 After Each Job Clean all oil, mud, and debris from die teeth, slip back cone surfaces, and spider bowl cone surfaces. Apply grease to both inner and outer cone surfaces. Inspect die teeth for chipping, breakage, or abnormal wear. Replace the full die set if any damage is found — never mix new and used dies.
2 Periodic Remove cylinder end cap. Clean dirt from piston rod. Inspect all seals for even wear — replace O-rings if worn. Apply grease and reassemble. Grease all six grease fittings (1/4″-28UNF) on crank shafts and link bushings.
3 Storage & Downtime Apply rust-preventive grease to all mating surfaces and cover with protective paper. Do not leave exposed outdoors. Protect air lines and cylinder seals from UV and weather aging. Store in a dry, ventilated warehouse free of corrosive substances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What models are available in the QPYG Series?

Five models: Model B (55T, 1.315″-3.5″), Model C (82.5T, 1.315″-5.5″), Model CHD (125T, 1.315″-5.5″), Model C-A (82.5T with hinged gate), and Model CHD-A (125T with hinged gate). The “A” variants feature a hinged gate design that allows lateral pipe removal without disconnecting the string.

Q2: What air pressure is required?

The pneumatic cylinder operates at 0.6-0.9 MPa (87-130 PSI). This is compatible with standard rig compressed air systems. The cylinder has a 102 mm (4″) stroke and provides smooth, controlled raising and lowering of the slip assemblies.

Q3: How does the safety latch work?

The manual safety latch consists of an arcuate block that engages with the connecting rod shoulder. When the slip assemblies are lowered and gripping the pipe, the operator manually closes the safety latch. This mechanically locks the crank mechanism, preventing the slips from releasing even if air pressure is lost. The latch must be manually opened before the cylinder can operate again.

Q4: How do I change dies for a different pipe size?

For pipe sizes 1.315″-3.5″, use the 3-1/2″ slip assembly with interchangeable dies. For 3-1/2″-4-1/2″, switch to the 4-1/2″ slip assembly. For 4-3/4″, 5″, and 5-1/2″, use the corresponding solid slip assemblies with integral dies. Always replace dies as full sets — never mix new and used dies.

Q5: Can the spider handle ESP cables?

Yes. The slip assemblies are profiled with a special cross-section that allows Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) cables to pass alongside any size of tubing string without damage. This makes the QPYG spider ideal for ESP installation and retrieval operations.

Q6: Is the spider field-serviceable?

Yes. The pneumatic cylinder is field-serviceable — the end cap can be removed to clean the piston rod and inspect/replace O-ring seals. All six grease fittings (1/4″-28UNF) are standard and field-serviceable. Cylinder seal kits are available as spare parts. Routine maintenance can be performed by rig crew without specialized tools.
